Caring for Your Mala: Handling & Upkeep

A newly acquired mala first needs a period of "dry brushing": brush it gently every day with a soft bristle brush to lift residue and dust, letting the beads build an even base layer. Do not rush this — it usually takes one to two weeks.

Once the surface shows a warm sheen, move on to hand-wearing. Always wash your hands first, so sweat and oils do not soak straight into the wood grain. Half an hour a day is enough; then let the beads rest so the patina oxidises naturally.

The heart of upkeep is "rest over play". When not wearing the mala for long stretches, wrap it in cotton cloth and store it away from sun and sudden temperature swings. A fine mala nurtures the object — and steadies the mind.
